Luke 8:24 - Storms be Still

Exposition

In verses 22-23 Jesus had instructed his disciples, let us go over to the other side of the lake. As they sailed, Jesus fell asleep and there was a storm and they were in jeopardy.
There are quite a number of things that we can learn from this story. Based on verse 22, it is clear that Jesus gave his consent before the disciples embarked on the journey and Jesus went with them on the journey. So if you enquire from Jesus before you make any decision, be assured that he will be with you. Remember Hebrews 13:5 says He will never leave you nor forsake you. It should also be clear that the presence of Jesus in the boat with you does not mean there will not be storms.

As Isaiah 46: 10 says He knows the end from the beginning, which means Jesus, knew there will be a storm. We can safely say that there is no storm or situation in your life that the Lord, Jesus is not aware of. Despite His knowledge of the impending storm, He still slept off.
Like many of us, panic set in and the disciples felt Jesus was not concerned about their welfare. Many people are no different when the going gets tough, where are you God they ask? Can’t you see I need money to do this or that? It is so easy to forget the miracles of the past when it looks like the world seems to be caving in.
The cry of the disciples was a heartfelt one as they called on Him to save them. We know that He responded. A lesson to be learnt is that prayers said in faith will always receive answers. James 5:16 tells us that the fervent effectual prayers of the righteous avails much. When we pray there must always be an expectation the God will answer. There is a confidence that God Almighty always comes through for his own people. Psalm 91:15 says when they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honour them.

Jesus rebuked the wind and the storm ceased and there was calm. It should be clear that the One who created everything in the universe has power over his creation.  Just as He spoke the world into existence, He spoke to the storm and the storm did not have a choice but to be still. No matter where the storms in your life are from, or how long they have been threatening to blow you off course, a call to Jesus means the end has come to the torment from the storm.

Jesus came to give peace. Know that if you have Jesus in your lifeboat, every problem will be solved. He will right every wrong direction the ship of your life is going towards. If you depend on Jesus for your survival, you will survive. You can’t make it on your own. Jesus is at the door, open up this day, you won’t regret it.

Prayer

I invite you, Jesus to steer the boat of my life. As Jesus gave me power over all he created, I command every storm in my life to cease operation in Jesus name. I receive the peace of God in every area of my life in Jesus name.
